Once again, it seems that my rushing through a task that should have had my attention is causing a bit of a problem. Textbook selection is something I rarely devote the appropriate time needed. The deadline comes, and I find myself ruffling through pages of new texts at sound breaking speed, making hasty decisions because that's easiest at the moment. Then, when it is time to create the course's syllabus, I am faced with a "what the fuck was I thinking". As I finally undertook my last syllabus today (Intro to Literature), I opened my textbook of nonthoughtful choice. It is a compact (very compact) edition of the text I have used for several semesters. Turning the pages I discovered that story after story wasn't there. How could Ellison not be anthologized? Where was Vonnegut? After I got over my story disappointment, I began to be relieved by the poetry choice. Fumbling through the pages, I located most of the poems I like to cover. And then, the disappointment began all over. There was no "Flea," "Colonel," or "Noiseless Patient Spider." Will I get over it? Duh, I'm already over it and imagine that within the next year I will again mistakenly choose a text (slow learner me).
