Gay Pride

posted Sunday, 24 June 2007

Pridefest always makes me not just smile, but grin in brilliant queerness. This morning, getting awake and out the door by 9:15am proved easy (something that has been problematic all week since returning from my Daytona AP Grading Marathon). Opting for comfort, I donned some baggy khaki shorts, my favorite Hawaiian shirt, and a seasoned Pride necklace and ankle bracelet, and hurried to our spot on Colfax to watch the parade. Despite ridiculous heat, the parade shined, this year headed by Rainbow Alley (yeah). I love the Dykes on Bikes, their beautiful tans against the roar of the motorcycle that get the parade going. Loud floats, brilliant colors, and tons of smiles followed one another down Colfax, shouting in their song, their march, their beat, we're queer and we're proud.

I am thrilled to be queer; proud to be loud about who I am, who I love, and who I will continue to be; and constant in my faith that with each passing Pridefest, society will grow closer to seeing the queer community as their neighbors, equals, and individuals deserving of all the same rights and privileges accorded to mainstream (heterosexual) society.
