The introductory class blogs gave glimpses of a variety of reasons students enrolled in the class. Several students enrolled because of previous experiences with the instructors, hoping for a similar experience in this class. Other students had journeyed through HUM121 and were eager to continue their travels through HUM122. There were others who were hoping this class would provide a release from previously encountered boredom. The most striking thing, however, that brought these introductions together is how perfectly the students enrolled in the class seemed to embody the definition of the course. According to the state curriculum guide for HUM122, the course "examines written texts, visual arts and musical compositions to analyze and reflect the evolution and confluence of cultures in Europe, Asia and the from 800 C.E. to 1750 C.E." When reading through the introductions, it became clear that the class was comprised of those who loved written texts, others who studied visual arts, and others who played with musical compositions. Additionally, many of these students do not simply fall into one of the categories; they blend across several, just like the study of humanities.
Written Texts
Several students discussed their love of reading/writing through direct statements or references to literary icons. Brett clearly states that he "enjoy[s] writing" and is hopeful that the class contributes to these skills. Hannah hopes to be a writer and spends time creating stories and poems. In Peter's introduction, he lets the class know that his blog might be used for posting some of his stories. His blog clearly shows him as a writer in its title "Writing for fun and hopefully profit." Readers clearly exist in the company of writers, and such as is the case with Brynne, who immediately after introducing herself, lets us know that she enjoys reading "a lot". Even though Nick doesn't directly state his love for reading, it is apparent by his introduction referencing a desire to become the "Walt Whitman of research papers."
Visual Arts
When it comes to the visual, the class clearly contains artists and those passionate about the arts. Heather makes beaded jewelry. A fellow artist who also creates adornment, although of a different type, is Cory, who lets us know he is a tattoo artist. In addition to this, he is pursuing his interest in web design and his blog clearly showcases those skills. Lehia previously took a humanities course which helped her explore interests in art, architecture, and sculpture. Aubrey had previously thought that a career with a lab coat might suit her; however, she is now considering a career related to architecture. Peter blends into this category as well when he lists drawing and sculpture as pastimes. Additionally, he spends time playing video games, since he is the secretary of the Video Game Club. Dustin can also be found playing video games. Visuals are clearly a part of Jake's world; he desires a future in the movie business.
Music
"I like all kinds of music, you name it and I like it" is how Dustin initially refers to his musical tastes. He then goes on to admitting liking country music. Heather shares his liking for country music and lets us know that it's her favorite type of music. Although this is her favorite, she will listen to a full spectrum of music "when forced". Another lens into music arrives in Hannah's introduction; we learn that she makes music with her guitar.
