Community Supported Agriculture Experiment

posted Monday, 30 June 2008

After reading The Omnivore's Dilemma, I decided that I needed to be more conscious and aware about the food I eat. One of the inspirations from the book was to eat local, not only to support community and local commerce, but also to eat more responsibly by eating what is actually in season. Thus, N and I decided to invest in a small share to support Grants Farm. The pickups started a couple of weeks ago, and with those pickups we received spinach, different types of lettuce, garlic scape, rhubarb, snow pea pods, radishes, onions (courtesy of a sister farm in Georgia that trades), and celery. This is what we've done with the food:

  • Lettuce and snow pea pods braised in oil, onion, and garlic scape
  • Salads using radishes, red leaf lettuce,  romaine, and green/red butter lettuce
  • Spinach/mushroom quiche
  • Phyllo tart with rhubarb, strawberry, and apricot
Not only is the food tasty, but it also stretches N and I to think of different things to do with the ingredients each week.

We recently joined something similar, and... tonight, I made the exact same thing! Lettuce & peas, etc.. I laughed when I opened your post because I was chewing said dinner at that very moment.

The only difference is that mine braised in butter instead of oil. It's all part of the master plan: I'm going to die young of a heart attack, so that I don't have to worry about getting skin cancer when I'm old. See, eating the butter now enables me to lie in the sun guilt-free! Quite brilliant, I think.

And isn't it interesting how one's definition of young/old changes though the years.... for some reason, I still think I'm young....
