Girls Rock! The Movie
In one week, girls ages 8-18 come together to learn instruments, practice, form bands, and then perform the one song they have created in front of a group of hundreds of admirers. The documentary focuses on four girls: Laura (death metal adopted Korean girl sporting an Iron maiden tshirt and looking for others to bond with), Misty (discovering safety in a new world that is very different from a former life escaping drugs and homelessness), Palace (an 8 year old who learns that life is a bit more than simply looking pretty), and Amelia (a high strung guitar thrashing one woman show who writes a medley of songs about her dog Pippi). After watching the film, I wanted to go to rock n roll camp. Imagine a week filled with opportunities to bond with other women, possibilities of spontaneous tunes, and surprises that emerge when you simply nourish you. Despite some annoying moments like Palace's chilling model look with an innocent 8 year old face accompanied by perfect dress and almost perfect lipstick and Amelia's ear screeching abuse of the guitar, the film made me miss my rock n roll days of jamming and practicing and finding that perfect moment when the beat hits the tune and all band members become a perfect one.
